3Rs-Centre Utrecht Life Sciences
Newsletter, February 2018
The mission statement of the 3Rs-Centre Utrecht Life Sciences (ULS) is to stimulate the development, acceptance and implementation of methods which can Replace, Reduce and Refine (the 3Rs) animal experiments. The centre facilitates the 3Rs in education and animal research in many ways, by providing information and advice about 3Rs models.

Development of a human uterine model for research on female reproduction
At the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) at Utrecht University, Annick van den Brand and her colleagues have developed an in vitro endometrial model made of human uterine cells, in order to better test the effects of potentially harmful substances on the uterus.

Utrecht Life Sciences launch hubs for 3Rs innovations
The Life Sciences hubs aim to bring excellent researchers from different disciplines together to work on societal relevant issues and scientific breakthroughs. Two hubs have the potential to accelerate the development of methods that replace animal models: Utrecht Advanced In Vitro Methods (U-AIM) and Utrecht Platform for Organoid Technology. The hubs stimulate productive and long lasting multidisciplinary collaborations with public and/or private stakeholders thereby creating shared value and, hence, societal and economic benefit.

Online register for animal study protocols
Preclinicaltrials.eu is an online database where you can register your animal study protocols and find other researchers’ existing protocols. We recommend you use it and also register your own research. You will gain insight into current research and research that is finished (but may not be published). This increases transparency and avoids unnecessary duplication. Special attention is paid to parameters that reduce the risk of bias and enhance study quality. The register focuses on confirmatory trials. For questions or remarks, please contact info@preclinicaltrials.eu.

Survey respondents wanted: Membrane Transporters in Chemical Safety Assessment
The EU Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) would like to invite you to participate in the survey " Membrane Transporters in Chemical Safety Assessment". With this survey, EURL ECVAM would like to capture the current use and applicability of the extensive available literature on membrane transporters for safety assessment of environmental contaminants and for biomedical research with a view of identifying and promoting the use of animal-free methods. The survey will remain open until 28th February 2018.

Support our activities!

The 3Rs-Centre ULS maintains the 3Rs databases: The Humane Endpoints Website, the Interspecies Database and the FCS-free Database. These websites contribute to the refinement, reduction and replacement of animals used for research and are free of charge for their users. The website does not receive any financial support and their future relies on donations and gifts. You can help us with keeping these websites available for free by donating a small amount of money for the maintenance and updating of these databases. We are happy with all donations! The 3Rs Program is part of the charitable fund Friends of VetMed, and as such is exempt from any gift or inheritance taxes. This means that 100% of your donation will contribute towards the purpose specified by you.
